This photograph of a steam locomotive was taken at the turn of the century. Steam powered locomotives would be THE kings of the rails until after World War II when the diesel-powered engines that gained a foothold in the 1930s would take over and push steam into the history books. There is no denying that steam locomotives were dirty and technology passed them by, but is there a sound more pleasant to the ear than the chugging steam locomotive and the beautiful whistle as the the train clickety-clacks on down the tracks?
