When I see an old photo like this I ponder on what the photographer was trying to capture. There isn’t enough of the headline showing on the newspapers to determine if this was a day of historic events in the summer of 1938. That is all we get for a date for this photo – Summer 1938.
The other information is that this was in New York City at 324 East 61st Street (at a grocery) between 1st and 3rd Avenue. Was there an important headline that day or was the photographer (Walker Evans) just capturing a typical scene at a grocery in New York City?
