Shelby County Fair Midway – 1940

1940 County Fair Midway

We went to a local county fair last week and aside from getting rained on as we were leaving – we had a wonderful time. There are a plethora of old county fair photos and the thing that struck me about this one was the way people were dressed. Although it might not have been their Sunday best it was fairly close. Look at all of the women wearing dresses and hats. The men are wearing dress shirts and slacks, hats, and you can see some with ties.

Contrast that with the outfits I saw at the fair last week and someone from this picture in 1940 would have a look of shock on their face! Now, I’m not saying I’m all for having to wear a dress shirt and tie to the fair or a ballgame, but some modesty and lack of vulgarity (amazing what people’s shirts have printed on them) would be nice.

Yes, there is something to be said for the “good ‘ol days.”
