He went 0-3, but reached base on an error and scored the go-ahead run to win the game. More important than that, he broke through the ridiculous color barrier established by baseball for over 50 years.
He hit 12 homers and stole 29 bases on the way to earning the 1947 Rookie of the Year award. He helped the Dodgers win the World Series in 1955 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1962. On April 15, 1997, 50 years after Jackie Robinson broke through the color barrier, Major League Baseball retired his number 42 for all Major League teams.
