Thanksgiving Maskers

This photograph from the early 1900s highlights the old practice of donning a costume and begging. Before Halloween gained in popularity as a chance to dress in costume and go door-to-door for treats, kids would dress up on the last Thursday of November (before that was designated as a national holiday for Thanksgiving) and beg for food or pennies.
